As the days grow longer and warmer, it’s the perfect time to refresh our diets with the vibrant produce of spring. Embracing seasonal foods not only supports local agriculture but also offers the freshest and most nutrient-rich options available. Let’s explore some springtime favorites that can help detoxify and rejuvenate your body.
Asparagus: This spear-shaped vegetable is a powerhouse of nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as fiber and folate. Asparagus is known for its natural diuretic properties, helping to flush out excess salt and fluid, supporting kidney function, and contributing to overall detoxification. Combining Asparagus with a healthy fats such as eggs, improves the absorption of Lutein from the asparagus, supporting eye health.

Radishes: One of my favourite root vegetables. An unsung food heroine, inexpensive and loaded with powerful nutrients! These colorful and peppery root vegetables are not only crunchy and delicious but also packed with antioxidants and vitamin C. Low calorie, with good amounts of folate, potassium, B6 and manganese. They even have sulforophane, a natural compound that boosts glutathione, our master antioxidant with anti cancer properties. Their high fibre and high water content help you feel full and stay hydrated. Radishes promote liver and gallbladder function, essential for detoxifying the body and maintaining a healthy digestive system. And don’t forget to eat the green tops for an added boost of nutrition. Can you tell how excited I am about radishes?
Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are rich in chlorophyll, which helps cleanse the blood and supports liver health. The variety of leafy greens during the season is endless. Think butter lettuce, arugula, watercress, endive, bok choy and tender microgreens to name a few. Incorporating a variety of greens in your diet can boost your energy levels and aid in detoxification. Greens contain a vast array of minerals including Vitamin K essential to bone health and proper blood clotting.
Strawberries: A quintessential spring fruit, strawberries are high in vitamin C and manganese, offering anti-inflammatory benefits. Their antioxidant properties help protect your heart and regulate blood sugar levels and support immune health.
Peas: There’s nothing like the taste of fresh peas. Not only are they sweet and tender but also a great source of plant-based protein and fiber. Protein is the main component of our muscles, skin, hair, eyes and internal organs, vital to our immune system, maintenance and repair. The fibre supports digestive health and they provide essential nutrients like vitamin K and manganese.
