How to get healthy digestion and lose weight

We’ve all seen the commercials promoting how fiber will keep you “regular.” But fiber does so much more than that!

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate, and it is unique in its composition because our bodies cannot digest it. Which means that it moves through our body without being broken down into sugar the way that other carbohydrates do.

In fact, fiber binds to other fats and sugars in your digestive tract and prevents your body from absorbing them. This means you absorb less calories. Think of it as a scrubber for your GI tract.

Fiber also increases your gut health by feeding the good bacteria in your GI tract, which helps those bacteria to produce more short-chain fatty acids (SCFA’s). Don’t be thrown off by the word fatty. Short chain fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect and play a major role un a healthy gut and immune function.

And SCFA’s are regulated by diet putting you in control of healthy digestion!

And yes, fibre does make your bowel movements more normal by preventing constipation and softening stools, which ultimately helps maintain bowel health. Read more about improving digestion here

Consuming nutrient dense food with high fiber ensures that your body gets what it needs without absorbing excess sugar and calories. Beans, whole grains, brown rice, oats and bran cereals are all excellent sources of fiber. Eat plenty of greens and vegetables. Your body will feel great and so will you.
